Electricity consumption in Belgium on the decline

Last year, 80.6 terawatt-hours of electricity were consumed in Belgium, less than previous years, according to figures from the Belgian energy regulators. In 2012, 81.6 terawatt-hours were reportedly used, while three years ago this number was as high as 83.3 terawatt-hours, reports Het Laatste Nieuws.
The decrease can be attributed to several factors, according to the regulators, including the economic situation, the weather, and the fact that more and more consumers have installed solar panels to produce their own energy.
Consumption of natural gas was also down 1.3% compared to the previous year, a decrease that is mainly due to lower usage by industrial customers.

Aha ? And so better appliances that consume less are not taken into account ? Surely they are bringing down overall consumption, as any new appliance will be less power-hungry than older models. So let's put money into energy efficiency, not into expanding large-scale capacity.
