Eddy Merckx's grandson to compete in Olympics for Argentina

The Argentine Olympic field hockey squad includes the half-Belgian, half-Argentinian player Luca Masso. Masso, the grandson of Belgian cyclist Eddy Merckx, opted for the Argentine national team over Belgium, writes Sporza. “The whole family supported my decision,” he says.

Masso is the son of former tennis player Eduardo Masso and Sabrina Merckx, the daughter of legendary cyclist Eddy Merckx. While he played for the Belgian national teams growing up, Masso chose to join Argentina for this summer's Olympic Games in Rio.

"The Belgian federation informed me that I would not be selected to go to Rio with the Red Lions, so after consultation with my family I opted for the Argentine team,” Masso explains. “I'm proud of my decision. Competing at the Olympics is the dream of every athlete.”
