Eddy Merckx faces lawsuit for alleged corruption

14:41 31/05/2016

Belgian cycling champion Eddy Merckx faces a lawsuit over an alleged corruption case after the Brussels prosecutor's office found evidence that Merckx bribed a police chief in order to sell 46 bicycles to the local police stations of Anderlecht, Forest and Saint-Gilles. The police chief and his wife allegedly received two top-of-the-line Merckx bikes in exchange for the transaction.

"Active corruption," according to the prosecution, which recently issued Merckx an official summons to appear before the council chamber, a division of the criminal court, later this year, according to Het Laatste Nieuws. Should the chamber then refer “The Cannibal” to the court, he could risk two years in prison for bribing a civil servant.

Given all the (serious) corruption that seems to be rife at every level of Belgian business and politics, the fact the Merckx may be prosecuted over 46 bikes (plus 2 bribe-cycles) is almost amusing.
