What happens if the permit de conduire provisoire expires? I need to renew/redo it and wonder what I must do. Do I need to sit the written exam again? Retake the 20 hours courses again? Simply extend it somehow? Thank you for any information.

you will definitely need to do the written exam again.
I think you will get the standard learning drivers license (which says you need to be accompanied by an experienced driver) and to drive alone you will need to take 20hours of lessons again.
