Driver gets car stuck in Brussels tram station

11:58 23/02/2016

Tram services on lines 3, 4 and 51 in Brussels were halted on Monday evening after a car got stuck in the tunnel at Brussels South Station. The driver made it several kilometres through the tunnel before getting stuck in the tracks, writes Brusselnieuws. Public transport company STIB said it has “never experienced anything like this.” Bus shuttles were dispatched to take passengers to their destinations until the car was removed.

The driver of the sports utility vehicle entered the tunnel at the Albert premetro station, and continued to drive until Brussels South Station, passing the stops Saint-Gilles and Horta along the way. The car came to a halt when it got stuck in the tracks, but the driver refused to get out. His motive is still unclear.

It is not the first time that a car has entered a tram tunnel in Brussels, according to STIB's Guy Sablon, but it is the first time that one travelled so far. “The driver couldn't possibly have not known he didn't belong there," Sablon said, who added that it's a miracle no one was hurt in the incident.

I bet I know how it happened too, thanks to the stupid new road layout at the junction of Avenue Jupiter and Avenue Alexandre Bertrand. Now the avenue continues straight onto the tram tracks just ahead of the tunnel with no adequate signs. If cars go straight ahead they get stuck in the mud as it's so wet, it has happened many times in the last weeks. He will only have made it because it's a 4x4. He should have reversed out of course once he realised.

I hope the drivers that get caught by this get compensation due to inadequate markings, but I doubt it.
