Double surname is most common in Brussels

13:48 25/07/2017

More than three years after a new law made it possible for parents in Belgium to choose from four surnames for their newborn child, the double last name is most common in the Brussels-Capital Region, writes Bruzz.

Since the introduction of the law in May 2014, a small number of parents in Flanders chose a double last name, compared to many more in Wallonia and considerably more in Brussels.

Of the 104,227 children born in Belgium in 2016, 5,526 (5.3%) received a double last name. In 4,690 cases, the father's name came first, while in 836 others the mother's name came first.
