Dog walking

Question

Hi,

I've got an energetic puppy at home and I'm trying to find ways to keep her entertained while I'm at work. She has a nice, big balcony with toys, but whenever I come home she gets very excited. I have an 11 month old baby, so a jumpy puppy can knock him over and scare him.

Have you hired someone to come walk your dog during the day? If yes, how much do you pay and can you recommend someone in Uccle?

Any other ideas on "defusing" the puppy would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Dear OP,

Try not to worry too much, the puppy is just delighted to see you. My two 3year old labs are still delighted to see me whever I return and even if I've only been out for a few minutes. I think the ignoring your puppy until he/she is calm or obeys the sit command should work.

At Jean Blanquart - 'so whenever left alone (especially being puppy) they are sad and feel abused'. This comment does not help as the OP should not be made to feel bad or guilty and in any case - we cannot say for sure that we actually know what dogs feelings are???

There are dogs that get anxious when left alone but we can teach them that it's ok to be alone. Start by going out for a few minutes and coming back in and giving a treat and extend the time you are out bit by bit etc.

In any case I am not the expert but learned a lot from two books recommended to me when I had puppies - The Perfect Puppy by Gwen Bailey (this was my bible!!). And I am currently reading a book all dog owners should read - In defense of dogs - why dogs need our understanding by John Bradshaw. I got both on Amazon.

Good luck and enjoy your puppy and it's great the dog and your child are growing up together!
