Docks shopping complex is 'healthy competition', says Mayeur

23:10 20/10/2016

Brussels mayor Yvan Mayeur is pleased about the grand opening of the new shopping complex Docks Bruxsel, calling it 'healthy competition' for the local market, including the shops in the city centre. "We must dare to change, and reposition the commercial offer in Brussels," he said, according to Bruzz.

The new shopping centre Docks Bruxsel opened this morning for the general public. During the official inauguration on Wednesday, Mayeur expressed his support for new projects that contribute to "healthy competition", such as Docks Bruxsel, but also the future Neo Project and the planned renewal of the Inno and City shopping malls in the city centre.

"Docks Bruxsel should incite everyone to reposition themselves, but I am convinced that Rue Neuve will remain the central shopping area in Brussels and Belgium," said Mayeur.

I was on the Rue Neuve yesterday and it is a sad area. The street is dirty, gypsies begging, homeless align the street, and not attractive at all. My guess is the shopping center will put the shops on Rue Neuve out of business. Tourists who wander the Rue Neuve will not be impressed. Rue Neuve used to be a thriving shopping area as I used it often. I have no desire to re-visit that street now.
