Diamonds worth $50m stolen in airport armed robbery

11:12 19/02/2013

Armed robbers stole diamonds worth US€50 million while the gems were being loaded on to a plane at Brussels Airport yesterday evening, writes Reuters’ Robert-Jan Bartunek. Two vehicles carrying four armed men drove up to a security van near the Swiss passenger plane. “The men were armed and masked. There were no shots fired and nobody was injured,” a spokeswoman for the Brussels prosecutor said. One of the vehicles was later found, said officials, who would not comment on what was taken. The robbers managed to get on to the tarmac after breaking through the fence that surrounds the airport, an airport spokesman said.
