dental cleaning at a dentist's office---who does it?

Question

Hi,

Usually I get my teeth cleaned in the US, but won't be able to go this year, and thus, will miss my usual 6 month cleaning appointment.

Never been to a dentist in Belgium and was curious---if I just want to have a dental cleaning done, who does it, the dentists, or is there another person doing this task?

Also, is it acceptable to just have a dental cleaning and not the dental checkup?

I just want to have the dental cleanup since I already had my dental checkup by my dentist in the US earlier this year.

thanks!

you can make an appointment for just a cleaning indeed. i live in flanders, so i'm not sure if it's the same procedure in brussels, but here the dentist always does the cleaning. there is no dential hygienist job here.
also, just a head's up: teeth cleaning here is not remotely like it is in the US. it's very superficial. i changed dentists three times trying to find one that would clean my teeth properly and then just gave up. it's just simply a completely different method of working. (which is why so many older belgians have to have their teeth replaced.) In fact, if your teeth have been cleaned in the US six months ago, the dentist here might not even do anything. i've had them tell me after a year between cleanings: "they're fine, there's nothing i can do."

Same here...I've changed a number of times.
I had one dentist refuse to do x-rays after I complained of intense tooth pain. Her reasoning: your (straight) teeth look good.
I ended up needing a root canal.

I go to a dental practice near Gembloux, a good 20 minutes from the ring of Brussels. One of their dentists does deep cleaning, quite intense actually. I didn't think it was necessary to be so intense, but my teeth haven't felt or looked so clean since moving to Europe.
Their phone: 081/64 92 90
The receptionist is very nice and speaks very good English. I'm not sure if the dentists speak English. One for sure does not.

Thanks for the quick responses.
Rico, do you actually have the physical address to that dentist near Gemloux?
I don't have a car, but wanted to see if my colleagues could give me a lift there.
Thanks!

The best cleans I have had is with Cecilia Savio at the Scandinavian Dental Center, Arts-Loi. Very deep and thorough, and closest to American style as I have found.

If you just want a clean I think you need to let them know when you call.

I highly recommand the iDent clinic in Brussels. They have many dental specialties and are very kind. I started my orthodontic treatment there and my annually check-up and don't have any complain so far.
