Delta Airlines suspends flights between Atlanta and Brussels

14:38 03/04/2016

The US carrier Delta Airlines has announced it will no longer operate its Atlanta-Brussels route, one of its two connections to the Belgian capital. In the wake of the March terror attacks in Brussels, the airline has scrapped all flights between Brussels Airport and Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport for at least the coming year, writes VRT Nieuws.

Delta, one of the largest US airlines, connected Brussels Airport with Atlanta and New York. Delta's announcement comes as a blow to the Belgian travel industry, as the airline's hub in Atlanta is the busiest airport in the world in terms of passenger traffic.

Delta will, however, continue to serve Brussels from JFK Airport in New York. The Brussels-Atlanta route was presumably scrapped because flights between Brussels and Atlanta are more focused on tourists, while flights to and from New York draw more business travellers, writes De Morgen.

The decision was made “due to the continued uncertainty surrounding the re-opening of Brussels Airport and weakening demand,” Delta said on Saturday in a statement.
