Deliveroo bikers plan Brussels protest next Friday

23:28 15/11/2017

Deliveroo couriers in Brussels are planning a demonstration on Avenue Louise next Friday to protest about what they describe as worsening work conditions.

The protest, at the junction with Rue du Bailli from 17.30 on 24 November, has been organised by a group of cyclists working for the meal delivery firm and has the support of two trade unions.

Last month, Deliveroo told couriers that they would be paid per delivery and no longer by the hour.

The riders - who are self-employed - were also told they could no longer use the umbrella company SMart to bill Deliveroo for their work, which entitled them to some benefits enjoyed by employees.

Protest organisers say the changes will "drastically reduce people's income, which is already unacceptably low" in proportion to the hard physical work and anti-social working hours that the job requires.
