Delay for roadworks due to start in Rue Belliard

13:41 28/02/2022

Roadworks due to start in Rue Belliard on Monday to reduce the number of traffic lanes from four to three have been rescheduled to an unconfirmed date, reports RTBF.

The pilot project by Brussels Mobility, designed to create more space for cyclists and pedestrians, has been postponed at the request of the City of Brussels. It’s concerned that the work would cause too much traffic disruption in the coming months.

The city cites the new ‘Good move’ traffic plan for the pentagon, due to start mid-August, plus the increasing number of EU summits as the reason for their last-minute decision.

“In consultation with the region, we have requested the cancellation of this project. This test coupled with the next implementation of the new mobility plan of the pentagon, would be a lot”, says the office of Brussels mayor Philippe Close. “We must also take into account the European summits which will be more frequent given the situation in Ukraine.”

No date has been set to reschedule the works, “which remain an objective for the future”, says the mayor’s office.
