Data roaming charges to drop by more than 50% from 1 July

09:50 25/06/2014

Using your mobile phone abroad looks set to be a lot cheaper this summer, as the European Commission announced on Tuesday that data roaming charges in EU countries are to be cut by more than 50% from 1 July.

This mobile roaming cost-cutting exercise by the Commission carries on from a similar exercise it made in 2013 to reduce the price caps placed by operators on calls, texts and data downloads abroad.

Further drops in these caps from 1 July will see calls made abroad - currently capped at a maximum cost of 24 euro cents per minute - fall to 19 cents per minute. Data downloading abroad will fall from a cap of 45 euro cents per MB to 20 euro cents per MB. The cost of sending a text will not exceed 6 euro centimes.

EU Commissioner for the Digital Agenda Neelie Kroes tweeted: “Data #Roaming will be at least 25 times cheaper in these World Cup finals compared to 2010 finals. That is #EU 4 U”
