Cockroaches
Hi there,
is it common to get cockroaches in Brussels? We live in a duplex in BXL 1000, the house is old, but renovated, we have a garden and some bugs occasionally come in, but today I saw a second cockroach in the sous-sol bedroom, not in the kitchen which would be the obvious choice for roaches. We have put "Cafaran" sticks already in 7 places today - will it help? I'm really desperate... We are gonna ask the landlord what to do tomorrow, but I'm afraid that even if we get rid of them, they will keep coming back after some time. And I have always been a very "clean" person. Or should we already start considering moving?
An infestation of Cockroaches or 'cafards' is most certainly not common in Brussels. They do need professional treatment to get rid of them: http://cafards.be/Tarifs/tarifs.html
Roaches!!!!
Very hard to get rid off.
Either you saw the only two roaches or there is an army hiding.
In old buildings they just manage to hide everywhere (furniture, walls, outlets, you name it...)
Issue is that if your neighbours have them too they will come back again and again even after the exterminator has disinfested your apartment.
I'd consider moving.
Even if you move out, if the Etat des Lieux finds a roach infestation, then you would be charged for removing them - it's a tenant's responsibility.
Get a vermin removal expert in. You need to be sure any potential infestation is dealt with.
oh! oh! I live in Brussels and have never seen a roach here but I did live in Singapore for a while and we had a constant battle with them. I think if you have seen 2 you have hundreds so need professional help. I know Rentakil give a guarantee if they get rid of fleas, no idea if they do for roaches, ask them.
I would also phone the town hall, if you are seeing roaches in the street, it sounds as if there is a serious problem in the area. Personally, I would take the cowards way out, try and have the present infestation dealt with, and if that did not work, move. (Now I know not to rent a duplex between a hairdresser and a house for sale)
Having lived in the south of the USA, where roaches are a part of life--has nothing to do with how clean you keep your house. Here is a trick until rentokil arrives or in the future if you see a stray, spray with hair spray, sticks their legs so they can't scramble back to their nest and reproduce. If you have no pets, line the back of cupboards and along baseboards, under sinks with boric acid powder. Good luck.
