Coalition agreements reached on nuclear energy, noise pollution and radicalism

09:49 17/09/2014

Negotiators who are working on the formation of a new federal government succeeded in reaching agreements on energy issues, noise pollution linked to air traffic and radicalism.

As a result of these agreements, the nuclear power plants Doel 1 and Doel 2 are now expected to be kept going for a further ten years, instead of closing as initially planned in 2015. The negotiators said it was imperative that the country’s energy supplies were assured in a structured manner.

As for noise pollution coming from and around Brussels airport, the future federal coalition confirmed that a moratorium would be put in place, effectively bringing about a return to the situation before the creation of the controversial Wathelet plan in February. They foresee finding solutions that will see an end to flight paths over densely populated areas, limit night flights and improve infrastructure.

On the issue of radicalism, it has been agreed that radicalised perpetrators of crimes who have dual nationality will have their Belgian nationality withdrawn. The future government also plans to strengthen the National Security Council.
