Charleroi danse - Biennale 2017: Ballet de l’Opéra de Lyon, The Second Detail (1991) - William Forsythe, Dance (1979) - Lucinda Childs
This outstanding programme from the Ballet de l’Opéra de Lyon combines two centrepieces in the history of 20th century dance. The Second Detail was created by William Forsythe in 1991 and showcases what made him the inspired and creative restorer of the pointe: speed, diffracted movement and virtuosity with a strong sense of staging. Another highlight, Dance by Lucinda Childs (1979), is offered as the epitome of this American grande dame’s style: the mathematics in the steps with their extreme regularity and accidentals. The steps are embroidered together, endlessly restarted and renewed, hypnotic and poetic. In both cases, it is all about grace, supported by a company entirely devoted to protecting a repertoire that is so vital to our knowledge of the choreographic art.
