Changing official employment status

Hello. I'm in the process of phasing out my freelance work as I've found a good half-time contract that will most likely be renewed next year. What are the requirements for changing my status from independent? How would I go about doing this? The quarterly fees that I must pay as an independent are killing me, and I would really like to put freelance work behind me.
