CD review: Flying Horseman - "Twist"

15:56 04/05/2012

Bert Dockx may have a trivial Flemish name, but he has a voice that conjures up old spirits. So better not to joke with his alias Flying Horseman, through which he expels his demons.

With fewer guitars, there’s more space for his sometimes menacing baritone than on his atmospheric debut, Wild Eyes. The nine new tracks evoke the darkest hours, but his restrained delivery never seeks an apparent explosion. From time to time, his hypnotising folk noir contrasts with tender female backing vocals, but more often it is just accompanied by equally ominous guitar plucking and hazardous drumrolls.
