Car-Free Sunday extends beyond Brussels

09:50 19/09/2014

Brussels will not be the only car-free city on Car-Free Sunday on September 21. Around 25 towns and neighbourhoods outside Brussels are also making their centres car-free zones this Sunday, as part of the ongoing Mobility Week, said the organisation for sustainable mobility Mobiel21.

The focus of Sunday’s car-free activities will be the bicycle. As a result, Bruges centre will be car-free; Sint-Niklaas, East Flanders, will lay on a large bicycle market and in Landen, Flemish Brabant, and Oudenaarde, East Flanders, it will be possible to test out e-bikes. Kortrijk, West Flanders, will be running a number of cycling activities, as September is also the town’s designated cycling month.

The whole of Brussels will be car-free from 9.00 to 19.00. Public transport will continue to run as will taxis and emergency and security services. Anyone still needing to be reached by car in Brussels - for specific and duly justified reasons - can apply for a pass. The maximum speed is limited to around 30 km / h.
