Car accidents more likely in Brussels, but less severe

12:31 23/02/2016

Drivers in Belgium are at the greatest risk of being involved in an accident while driving in Brussels, but the severity of the accident is likely to be lower than in Flanders or Wallonia, according to a study by the Belgian Institute for Road Safety (IBSR), writes Brusselnieuws.

The study shows that while the number of accidents involving injury in the capital increased by 2% between 2014 and 2015, and the number of people injured in car accidents by 2.6%, the number of fatal accidents in the same period remained stable at 12. The IBSR therefore concluded that there are fewer deaths in Brussels traffic compared to Belgium's other regions because the severity of the accidents is lower.

Brussels has an extensive urban area where the speed limit is lower, which can limit the amount of damage in the event of a crash, and 92% of Brussels' accidents occur within the urban zone, the study reveals.
