can't upload picture

I'm trying to upload a small ad in the property for sale section, but when I try to upload a photograph I get an error message, which I can't reproduce here because it won't let me copy it! Those I have tried are jpeg and around 260 KB and neither portrait nor landscape will upload. How do I resolve the problem, please?
