'Camera shield' takes over Brussels Airport security

16:06 17/08/2016

Responsibility for the security around Brussels Airport is set to shift this week from armed guards to a “shield” of cameras that can monitor all access roads. "Only at certain times will targeted troops carry out extra checks,"announced the cabinet of interior minister Jan Jambon in De Morgen and Het Laatste Nieuws.

Since the terror attacks of 22 March, security at Brussels Airport was tightened to include checkpoints with armed guards. The management of Brussels Airport, however, favours a more 'discreet' form of security, and therefore called on Jambon to give the green light for the installation of the camera shield. The cameras can recognise license plates and sound the alarm when suspicious vehicles are approaching.

"The shield will be completely finished in the coming days, covering all roads," says spokesman Olivier Van Raemdonck. "But a quick interception team will always be on standby.”

And what about the terrorists who arrive at the airport in a regular taxi?

And those who operate "alone" arriving on public transport. No cameras mentioned in the railway or bus stations under the airport. We have all seen by now the terrorists do not use suspicious looking vehicules nor do they look usually look suspicious. One other question springs to mind. How long would it take the relevant authorities to react and be present on the ground?

Now that the new system has been advertised, the "bad guys" know how to work around the system! The system can only recognize Belgian license plates and those on some special list. The "bad guys" will not be using their own car. Yes the system will record all cars but, as Jogilabe says above, what is the response time considering the Ring is constantly blocked with traffic?
