Call for zero tolerance on illegal parking in disabled spaces

12:12 06/09/2013

Three members of the federal government have written to Belgian communes to raise awareness of the illegal use of parking spaces reserved for disabled people, their respective spokespeople announced yesterday. In their joint letter, Joëlle Milquet, home affairs minister in charge of equal opportunities, Melchior Wathelet, state secretary for mobility, and Philippe Courard, state secretary for disability, remind local authorities of the regulations governing the issuing of disabled parking permits and penalties for the misuse of parking spaces reserved for the disabled. Offenders faces fines  of between €120 and €1,500, or €110 if paid on-the-spot. In total, federal police recorded 41.501 such offences in 2012, a 4.4% figure increase on 2011.

Pleased the fine has increased for illegal parking in a disabled spot. However, I doubt it will ever be enforced as you never see police anywhere enforcing the laws which already exist.

My wife is disabled and uses a wheelchair, many times when I need to park in one of these few designated spaces, people without the required permit are using them. It makes things very difficult when you have to find another parking space and then get a parking violation anyway because you can only park in a disabled parking area! I also know several people that use a permit from their dead relatives just to avoid paying for parking!
This will be almost impossible to enforce but I'm hoping that some of these violators will get caught and have their cars towed!

VFG has repeatedly campaigned for parking for the disabled. With only result. So these car parks for disabled people, you put something on car and walk a few meters it is good for the figure. And respect for the disabled persons.
