buying a puppy

Question

Considering buying a puppy at the woefkesranch in Putte. Does anyone have suggestions or feedback on this breeder or where to get a puppy?

Don't do it! They are a puppy farm and animals are not guaranteed to be treated properly. Option 1 if you don't want to go through the annoying puppy stage (crying all night, peeing everywhere, chewing all your stuff) is adopt an older more relaxed dog from a shelter (www.helpanimals.be or www.sanscollier.be) Option 2 is depending on your circumstances, (i.e. if you don't have a garden don't get a border collie, if you wont be home during the day don't pick a breed that can't stay alone) is choose the breeds that would work best for you (you can get more info by contacting scaledogs.be who advise on this) and your family and choose a smaller family breeder where you can visit the puppy's parents and the breeder will even help you choose a pup with the right temperament for you. If you will be gone working all day you can use pawshake.be to find a dog walker. Good luck! Dogs are the best.

If you care about animals, please don't buy a puppy from that place.

I agree with everything Cakes says.

Suggest you also consult your local veterinarian for information and their advice.

Help Animals is THE place to go if you want to adopt an animal. Brussels is really lucky to have such a fine animal shelter.

There is also http://www.veeweyde.be/ in Anderlecht. We adopted a cat from there. Otherwise I would go via a reputable breeder with the Belgian Kennel Club http://srsh.be/pages-nl/ibd/index.html or via a specific breed club such as this which will list breeders such as this one for Hungarian Vizla's: http://www.magyarvizsla.be/home.html.

Any site that sells multiple breeds and always has available puppies is likely to be selling farmed animals...

Their is a register of good breeders called Sint Hubert here. Like the uk kennel club. If you really want a particular breed search their webpages for a suitable breeder, but you may have to wait a while for a litter and many have a waiting list. Even rescued dogs may not be house broken so doesn't matter the age you get that maybe an issue. Also you have to ask why the dog was placed in the shelter was it because it wasn't trained well and was destructive.
That said I would take a mutt over a pure breed any day less likely to have genetic issues and always grateful you took them. We used arca Noah who fly dogs in from Spain you apply on line and they seem to often have young dogs in need of a home

I agree, don't buy, adopt. There are pedigreeds for adoption as well, in animal shelters and just because they are in a shelter doesn't mean they have behavioral problems. Usually the problem is the master not the animal. The staff know the character traits of all the animals and can help you choose one that suits your needs. Be kind.

Thanks all for your responses / suggestions. Did quite some research and checked out all options carefully. We'll soon be bringing home our new puppy, from a reputable (Sint Hubertus listed) breeder, when he's old enough in a couple of weeks!
