Brussels is Twitter hotspot

11:48 11/12/2014

In Brussels, the majority of tweets, or messages sent via social networking service Twitter, come from the city centre, according to an update of the Twitter map of the world, created by American software developer Eric Fischer, reports brusselnieuws.be.

According to the map, Brussels is Belgium’s biggest Twitter hotspot. Ghent and Antwerp are also clearly visible. The map confirms that Twitter is still primarily a phenomenon of big cities, as brusselnieuws.be noted two years ago in a report.

Most tweets in Brussels originate from the city centre, especially around the Grand Place, Central Station and Place de la Bourse. Spots with free wireless internet make it easier and cheaper to send tweets, such as the Grand Place and the McDonalds on Boulevard Anspach.

The small alleys around the Grand Place are also popular for tweeting, since many tourist restaurants are located there. Midi station is another Twitter hotspot, as are, to a lesser extent, the national football stadium, the European quarter, Brussels Airport, the inner ring road and the area around Heysel.
