Brussels tops waste chart

11:53 27/09/2012

Brussels holds the unenviable record of producing the most household waste in Belgium, a study published today in Le Soir reveals. Total annual waste for the Brussels Region stands at 260kg per inhabitant, compared to 174kg in Wallonia. Worse still for the capital, only 32 percent of its household waste is recycled – compared to 70 percent in Wallonia and 75 percent in Flanders. One suggested solution is the introduction of waste containers equipped with microchips, resulting in households being charged per kilogram of non-recyclable waste. The scheme is used by 38 percent of Walloon localities and resulted in a 7 percent drop within one year.
