11:44 28/02/2014

A new study reveals that the Brussels-Capital Region is among the most prosperous regions in the EU. According to Europe’s statistics agency Eurostat, the Brussels region sits third behind London and Luxemburg. The Eurostat study looked at the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) per capita among 272 areas across the EU's 28 member states.

The scoring system gave Brussels 222%, a result showing that on average Brussels’ residents more than double the income of the average European citizen. London took first place by a landslide with a score of 333%, and Luxemburg slightly higher than Brussels with 266. Hamburg and Bratislava (Slovakia) rounded out the top five.

Of the eight regions on the bottom of the prosperity list, all were located in Bulgaria and Romania.
