11:12 15/09/2016

With 7,393 inhabitants per square kilometre, the Brussels-Capital Region was the third most populous region in the European Union in 2014, after boroughs in East- and West London, according to the regional yearbook published Wednesday by the European statistics agency Eurostat, writes Bruzz.

The population in the capital is expected to continue to grow by as much as 83% between 2015 and 2050. Only the Spanish region of Melilla (+127%), French Guiana (+95%) and Luxembourg (+87%) will grow faster, according to the yearbook.

While four regions of Germany will see a sharp rise in the number of older inhabitants by 2050, this will not be the case in the European capital, according to Eurostat. For every person aged 65 or older, by then there will be four people in Brussels between 15 and 64 years old.

The yearbook contains various statistics for European regions with more than 800,000 people, including fertility rate, life expectancy at birth and labour and unemployment.
