Brussels to scrap New Year's Eve fireworks
The City of Brussels will not be organising its traditional New Year's Eve fireworks this year at Mont des Arts/Kunstberg, writes brusselnieuws.be based on a report from RTBF and confirmed by the City Council. The fireworks will be replaced by an alternative pyrotechnic show at De Brouckère.
The annual fireworks display has in the past attracted more than 100,000 spectators ringng in the New Year. Opposition leader in Brussels-City Joëlle Milquet responded with surprise to mayor Yvan Mayeur’s plans to scrap the event.
According to Milquet, the fireworks at Mont des Arts/Kunstberg are an integral part of the New Year’s celebration for many Brussels residents. Moreover, the event costs the city nothing, apart from security costs. The fireworks are provided by the service Brussels Promotion, said Milquet.
According to Mayeur, the City of Brussels is this week finalising plans for a New Year’s Eve pyrotechnic display to take place at De Brouckère.
