Brussels region seeks opinions on Porte de Ninove redesign

09:17 08/03/2016

As the redesign of Brussels' Porte de Ninove officially gets under way, the Brussels-Capital Region has invited residents of the neighbourhood to contribute their ideas for a new park. The plans are not yet fixed, but promise to include “a large open space, with lots of green lawns, tree-lined paths and a playground,” according to Brusselnieuws.

Many locals are looking forward to the planned park, which so far also includes the creation of a wadi, an area where water can stand in periods of heavy rainfall. The grounds still need to be rehabilitated after several buildings were demolished, so that construction can start later this year.

But the details are still up for discussion. "Because the park is larger than originally planned, we have to review the plans," says public works minister Pascal Smet. "The aim is to involve the residents. There is already a first public meeting planned on Wednesday."

I just hope the area will be well taken care of by its residents and users. Trash needs to be contained, graffiti not present, and paving stones repaired the moment they become dislodged. I would insist on major CCTV so culprits can be caught if up to no good. I approve of spending public money to beautify an area but, if not policed with cameras and roaming community officers, the area could soon be a mess.
