Brussels public transport is free on New Year’s Eve

14:53 30/12/2023

Brussels public transport operator Stib will allow passengers to ride the bus, metro and tram for free from midnight on New Year’s Eve to 5.30 on New Year's morning.

Service hours and frequency are likewise being increased to cover this holiday period so that people can travel to and from festivities.

“A total of some 650 drivers, dispatchers and security staff will be on hand to ensure that Brussels residents and other travellers celebrating New Year's Eve in the capital can move around safely and unhindered,” Stib said.

“Stib is strengthening its transport offer so that spectators can enjoy the event without worrying about their return journey.”

In a first, night buses (Noctis) will also run until 5.00 on New Year’s Day. Travellers can use lines N04, N05, N06, N08, N09, N10, N11 and N18 every 15 minutes, and every 20 minutes on lines N12, N13 and N16.

Frequencies are reinforced on metro lines and on the following tram lines:

  • Metro lines 1, 2, 5 and 6: every 7.5 minutes
  • Tram lines 3 and 4: every 7.5 minutes
  • Tram lines 7 and 25: 12 minutes
  • Tram lines 8 and 93 between Louise and Legrand: 12 minutes
  • Tram lines 39 and 44: 15 minutes
  • Tram line 55: 10 minutes
  • Tram line 81: 10 minutes to 2.30, then 15 minutes to 5.30

Some diversions and interruptions to service are expected due to the festivities organised in the city. From 20:00, tram lines 92 and 93 will not run between Botanique and Louise and bus routes 12, 34, 38, 64, 80 and 95 will go no further than Place du Luxembourg.

Route 71 will be limited to Porte de Namur, bus 54 will be diverted to Louise from Porte de Namur, and line 46 will not run beyond Gare Centrale.
