Brussels police hold alcohol check outside major wine fair

Brussels police stationed at the Heysel Parking A on Monday during the annual Megavino wine fair carried out alcohol checks on departing visitors. Out of a total of 354 drivers, five were found to have a blood alcohol level above the legal limit of 0.22 mg per litre.

Between 14.30 and 16.30, the police conducted breathalyser tests on drivers leaving Megavino, Belgium's largest event dedicated to wine. One of the drivers was ordered to wait three hours before driving, while three others had to wait six hours. One man, with a blood alcohol level of more than 1 mg/l, had his driving licence revoked for 15 days. Another driver had his licence revoked for driving under the influence of cannabis, the Brussels public prosecutor reports .

It was the first time in 17 years that the police had held an alcohol check at the event, according to Megavino organiser Alain Bloeykens.
