Brussels native runs for Mayor of New Orleans
On 14 October, Brussels native Patrick Van Hoorebeek hopes to become the first Belgian to be elected mayor of an American city, reports Bruzz. 'More wine, less crime' is the slogan of Van Hoorebeek, who runs a wine bar with a Manneken Pis replica as mascot in New Orleans.
The 63-year-old Van Hoorebeek first came to the United States in 1985 to visit his father, but ended up staying for good. His wine bar is a dream that became reality, he tells Het Laatste Nieuws.
The Brussels native has now set his sights on a new dream: Mayor of New Orleans. He is running as an independent candidate with a limited election budget. "It will be a difficult task," he says in the newspaper. "My campaign budget is €10,000, while other candidates have €2million available."
Van Hoorebeek's business is called Patrick's Bar Vin, and 'PP Boy' is its mascot.

A Belgian mayor? I hope New Orleans voters are able to read the Belgian papers.
