Brussels-Capital Region launches new logo and flag

12:13 18/12/2014

The Brussels-Capital Region has unveiled its new flag and logo. Gone is the stylised iris of gold on a blue background, in comes a golden heart blooming amid two blue petals. This week the Territorial Development committee of the Brussels Parliament approved a motion to change the flag to sport the new logo.

The new design (pictured) was developed two years ago and has been slowly replacing the old iris within the administrative departments of the region. The motion to change the flag is the new design’s arrival on the public scene.

The region estimated the cost of the new design and its adoption as the region’s new house style at €50,000. “The decision to let the flag evolve has to be seen in the framework of a city marketing plan to improve the region’s visibility though its communications media,” Jo De Witte, spokesperson for minister-president Rudi Vervoort, told De Morgen.

The former iris flag was the winner of a design competition and was adopted in 1991, just two years after the creation of the new region. The iris was chosen because it is a flower that thrives in marshy ground, which refers to Brussels’ origins in the marshes. The Old Dutch word broekzele means “home in the marsh”.

How dumb can you get? What does blue and yellow got to do with Belgium? Why could the colors not have been our flag colors -- black, red, yellow???? Looking at this logo/symbol, I see a Scandinavian country being marketed and not Belgium. Who did the market research??????????

Absolutely agree with Salsadancer: 50 K thrown out of the window, this kind of desing would be enought for a high school designing class, perhaps B+!

Will some investigative journalist do a research about relation of the well-rewarded designer to the requesting authority and about transparency of the competition for the winnin desing (if there was any)?

What about contacting professional historians and proessional heraldists first?

Colours are essential! I really miss the Belgian tri-colour, or at least two of the three national colours.

New flag. Great.

We can all relax now. Belgium and the EU will now be the dynamic economic powerhouse we have all been promised. People will be flocking to Brussels. New flag. Just super.

I suspect somebody made a buck though. ;-)

Heraldic Blue (Azure) and Yellow (Or) are colours found in the Brussels area for a long time. Each has its meaning (‘constancy’ and ‘strength’ being two). The new flag is also based on the colours of the European Union. The heart is symbolic and speaks for itself. Don’t like? Can’t please them all… Some say it’s a nice and easy ‘tracé’, that sticks in the mind. So well done you guys, and most of all good luck with the new banner!

I like it. As soon as the office party's over, I'm getting a facial tatoo based on it.
