Brussels Airport on road to recovery after attacks

11:50 15/06/2016

The 22 March terror attacks in Brussels continue to weigh on the number of passengers coming in and out of Brussels Airport, but the figures are improving every week, according to the airport. In the last week of May, the numbers were close to those of the same period last year, writes De Standaard.

According to the latest report from Brussels Airport, a total of 1,971,664 passengers used the airport last month, 8.4% less than in May 2015. Over the entire year so far, there has been a 15.6% decrease in passenger numbers.

The decline is most pronounced in the departing passengers: -12.8%. The number of passengers landing in Brussels fell by 7.3%, but the number of people with a stopover in Brussels is on the rise.

Brussels Airport says it expects to see "a continued systematic growth in passenger numbers over the coming weeks", as both Brussels Airlines and the low-cost airlines booked positive growth in May.
