Brussels Airport broke four records in 2017, including servicing the most passengers it has ever seen in a single year. Nearly 24.8 million passengers came through the airport in Zaventem in 2017.

By the end of the year, nearly 24.8 million passengers had come through the airport in Zaventem. The record figure was up a significant 5.6% on 2015, the previous record year.

On 28 July, the airport announced a record day, with more than 94,300 passengers arriving or taking off. July was also a new monthly record for the airport, with 2.5 million passengers in total.

December, meanwhile, was a record final-month-of-the-year for the airport, with more than 1.7 million passengers coming through. The airport reports that figures were up during the entire year for both passengers taking off as well as transferring.

The number of passengers, said the airport in a statement “are due to the growth in the network of destinations served from Brussels Airport, the use of larger aircraft on various routes, improved passenger load factors and the strong growth of Brussels Airlines”.

New flights to Shanghai were added last year, as well as to Mumbai and Teheran. Delta Airlines restarted its route to Atlanta, while Emirates doubled its service to Dubai.

At the same time, cargo handling reached its highest volume in 10 years, with the airport handling 535,634 tonnes, a growth of 8.3% on 2016.
