British earthquake felt in East and West Flanders

11:49 22/05/2015

A minor earthquake last night off the British coast, 2 km west of Ramsgate in Kent, could be felt in the Belgian provinces of East and West Flanders. The quake had a magnitude of 4.2, and some Belgians say they felt the tremor around 4.00, reports VRT News.

"I woke up when the blinds started rattling, and then the whole house moved slightly," Sandra Cardoen of Denderhoutem told VRT Radio.

British media have not yet reported any damage due to the quake, although police in Kent County received many calls from concerned citizens who “felt the ground shaking” for about 10 seconds.

The last time there was an earthquake detected in Belgium was in 2002, with an epicentre located just over the border near Aachen, Germany.
