Boost in stew meat sales thanks to Jeroen Meus

11:50 02/03/2015

Belgian supermarket chain Delhaize at the weekend sold about 10,000 kilograms of stewing beef, according to spokesperson Roel Dekelver. In an average weekend, the chain sells about 4,000kg of the cuts of the meat.

In celebration of the 1000th episode of his popular cookery programme Dagelijkse Kost (Daily Fare), TV chef Jeroen Meus asked his viewers to name their favourite classic Belgian dish. The overwhelming majority voted for carbonnades/stoofvlees, or beef stew with chips.

Yesterday, 1 March, was therefore proclaimed 'national stew-with-chips day', with thousands of people across the country ordering the dish in restaurants and chip shops, or preparing it at home.

Meus made an appearance at the start of the cycling race Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne yesterday to dish out portions of the stew to spectators.
