Bodies of three Belgian soldiers from First World War discovered

11:23 13/10/2016

The remains of three Belgian soldiers and a French soldier from the First World War were found in Kaaskerke, part of Dixmuide in West Flanders, reports the Defense Department. The last time the remains of Belgian World War One soldiers were found was in 1952, writes De Morgen.

Two of the three Belgian soldiers whose bodies were unearthed in Kaaskerke belonged to the 11th Line Infantry Regiment of Hasselt. The unit played a key role in the Battle of the Yser, the Belgian army's defence of the Yser Canal which formed a natural obstacle to the German advance. The regiment of the third Belgian military could not be determined.

The intention is to find out the identity of the soldiers by the end of 2017, "so that the victims will have a final resting place in 2018, 100 years after the end of the First World War,” explains Defense.
