Belgium’s first CO2-neutral beer to hit shelves soon

Beerstorming, the DIY brewer in Brussels, has succeeded in brewing a beer that is CO2-neutral. Bottles of the new brew, called BS#0028 GMGK, will hit local shelves on 1 March.

Some of the measures required to sell a product as CO2-neutral were relatively easy to implement, such as the use of green energy and recycled bottles. But even green energy is energy used, so the company compensated by funding the climate project Saving Trees in Uganda.

Saving Trees is a project that delivers energy-efficient cookstoves to families across Uganda. The cookstoves use 50% less charcoal and wood than the country’s traditional cookstoves.

Beerstorming was able to offset its own emissions by funding the making and distributing of the cookstoves, which reduce emissions in another part of the world. The beer is the first in Belgium to receive an official CO2-neutral label. The labels are awarded by the Brussels-based CO2Logic according to internationally recognised standards.

Beerstorming isn’t normally in the business of marketing beer. It’s core business is leading small groups through the process of brewing your own beer. It hosts beer tastings and brewing sessions at its premises in Saint-Gilles.
