Belgium is third most gay-friendly destination
Belgium is tied for third place in terms of gay friendliness, according to the Spartacus Gay Travel Index 2017. The Spartacus guide is widely used by gay travellers for more than 40 years, pointing out the best destinations for LGBT people worldwide.
The index has not changed much since 2016. Sweden and the United Kingdom share first place, while Belgium and the Netherlands come in third, followed by France, Denmark, Iceland, Finland, Ireland, Canada and the French island of Réunion.
The index takes several criteria into consideration for the ranking, such as whether gay couples are allowed to marry or enter a civil partnership, the existence of anti-discrimination laws and adoption rights for gays. It also looks at each country's general views regarding homosexuality, including the promotion of gay pride parades and tourism for the LGBT community.
Iran and Somalia share the 193rd and last place in the list.
