Belgium takes legal action over Ryanair cancellations

22:21 04/10/2017

Belgium will take legal action against Ryanair over its handling of the cancellation of 20,000 flights, consumer affairs minister Kris Peeters has announced.

Peeters said in a statement that the Irish airline had shown a "lack of professionalism". He said Ryanair only communicated with affected passengers in English and did not provide full information on their rights.

"Ryanair's cancellation of flights on such a large scale is inadmissible," he said. "My department has examined whether Ryanair has fulfilled all of its obligations.

"The airline only uses English - even though passengers have booked their flights in Dutch or French. Information on cancellation rights is not provided to customers in an adequate manner."

Peeters said the airline could be fined for unfair commercial practices if it does not "comply entirely with the rules in force".

After cancelling 2,000 flights in September and October, Ryanair last week cancelled a further 18,000 between November and March.

Consumer rights group Test-Achats welcomed the legal action. It said Ryanair had not told passengers that they could be entitled to compensation if their flight was cancelled less than two weeks before departure.

Test-Achats had already complained that the airline's customer service department could not deal with languages other than English.
