Belgium stops legal action against Ryanair cancellations

20:37 22/01/2018

Belgium has called off its legal action against Ryanair - on the grounds that the budget airline has "learnt its lesson" following a series of widespread flight cancellations last autumn.

Consumer affairs minister Kris Peeters announced last October that Belgium was suing the airline, accusing it of an "lack of professionalism" for cancelling 20,000 flights between September and Christmas due to staff shortages.

The legal action also arose because it is claimed that Ryanair only communicated with its Belgian customers in English and did not provide full information on their rights.

A spokesman for Peeters said Ryanair had "publicly acknowledged its mistakes, compensated all complainants, improved access to the complaints procedure and revised its communication on cancellations".

The spokesman added: "We are putting an end to the ongoing legal proceedings against Ryanair, but if there are new complaints, the lawsuit could be reactivated."
