Belgium personal debt - can I leave belgium?

Question

As a single parent Brit residing in Belgium I have a debt which has caused my bankruptcy and am now paid my income (I am independent) through a lawyer (mediator de dettes). I have no assets and the debt will clear/be written off in about 4 years. Can I work & live elsewhere (UK or further afield) or must I stay 'imprisoned in Belgium' where rising costs are crippling. My bi-lingual child - just started Belgian French secondary school - also finds school life unpleasant & frustrating. Comments please.

Try talking to your local OCMW. There is support available under Belgian and European law to support EU nationals. If you have lived in a commune for a certain time then the OCMW will help you.

Alos under recent Belgian legisaltion you can declare yourself bankrupt before the authorities, and your debts will be written off.

I'm not sure of the details and the current Belgian legislation, but contact you local commune or OCMW first and get their advice.
