Belgium jumps two spots in global competitiveness index

11:42 28/09/2016

Belgium's global competitiveness has improved for the first time in five years, rising two places to number 17 in the latest competitiveness report from the World Economic Forum, writes De Morgen.

Belgium's competiviteness score has been rising steadily for several years, but only this year managed to attain a higher position in the global index. With a score of 5.25 points, Belgium moves from 19th to 17th place in the list of 138 countries.

Belgium scores especially well when it comes to healthcare, education and technological development. But the country's biggest obstacles to creating more business, according to the report, are its tax rates and fiscal policies, restrictive labour laws and administrative burdens.

The top three most competitive countries remain unchanged again this year in the ranking, led by Switzerland, Singapore and the United States.

Vlerick Leuven Gent Management School, the Belgian partner involved in the report, will today give an explanation of Belgium's score at a press conference.
