Belgians travelled less by car in 2014

16:45 04/12/2015

Passenger cars in Belgium last year travelled 0.2% fewer kilometers than in 2013, according to a study by the Federal Public Service (FPS) Mobility and Transport. The study reveals that Belgians rack up more mileage than Dutch and French drivers, but less than German drivers. Each Belgian driver last year put an average of about 15,000 kilometers on the odometer.

For the annual study, FPS Mobility and Transport examines the number of vehicle kilometers driven in Belgium on the basis of figures from the databases of the Vehicle Registration Service DIV, Vehicle Roadworthiness Federation GOCA and Car-Pass.

According to the results, Belgians drove a total of about 82.93 billion km in 2014, 0.2% less than the previous year. That equates to an average of 15,096 km per driver last year, compared with 15,286 km per driver in 2013.

In Flanders and Wallonia, there was also a slight decrease, with 0.1% fewer kilometers than the previous year, while drivers in the Brussels-Capital Region travelled a substantial 1.4% fewer kilometers.
