Belgian telecom operators to promote mobile internet

13:00 24/09/2015

14 Belgian telecom operators are planning extra campaigns in October to promote mobile Internet in an initiative by the Belgian Institute for Postal services and Telecommunications (BIPT) and digital agenda minister Alexander De Croo. Users can expect to enjoy a number of perks in October, including free mobile internet, writes zdnet.be.

Belgium is doing well in Europe in terms of fixed networks, says De Croo. In terms of mobile Internet, however, there is still room for progress. With a mobile Internet presence of just 47% among mobile phone users, Belgium falls about 20% below the European average. The number is especially low among people over the age of 55.

According to De Croo, the gap is mainly due to a lack of competition in the implementation of 3G and 4G. Also, market research shows that Belgians are generally satisfied with their chosen operator and are therefore reluctant to change, or to try mobile Internet for the first time.

Several operators will therefore dedicate the month of October to informing the public about the ease and convenience of mobile surfing. Along with 14 telecom operators, including Mobile Vikings, Proximus, Base and Telenet, BIPT will allow people to try free unlimited mobile Internet, and existing clients will enjoy increased data packages, among other perks depending on the operator.

"Belgium is doing well in Europe in terms of fixed networks, says De Croo."
A country with 1 national ISP is doing well? Proximus/Scarlet are the same company. Is there another fixed internet provider still providing Belgium-wide coverage? Base and Mobistar stopped offering ADSL a long time ago and afaik, Telenet is mostly in Flanders and a few Flemish parts of Brussels. Since the Belgian government is still the majority shareholder of Belgacom (now Proximus), it's easy to understand why someone in the government would consider this as "doing well'.
When will the Belgian ISP market open up and become competitive? It's one of the most expensive in Europe, mainly due to the lack of competition.
