Belgian teens do less than six hours a week of homework

10:34 16/12/2014

A recent study by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) investigated how much time 15-year-olds in different countries spend on homework each week. In Belgium, a 15-year-old student spends on average 5.5 hours a week on homework, according to the study. That's less than in the Netherlands, and much less than in the United States.

Moreover, it is almost three times less than in Shanghai, where 15-year-old students reportedly spend an average of 13.8 hours each week on homework. Russia is number two in the list, with an average of 9.7 hours per week, slightly more than Singapore (9.4 hours).

The results reveal that Belgian students spend on average less time on homework than most of their counterparts in other countries, including the Netherlands (5.8 hours), the United States (6 hours) and Italy (8.7 hours). Belgium ranks 24th in the list of 38 participating countries with comparable data.

Boy, things have changed since my children attended Belgian schools. I remember each child having from 2-3 hours of homework every single night and it was done despite the occasional arguments, rebellion, and adolescent complaints. Adolescents with too much time on their hands get up to no good -- keep them intelligently busy.
