Belgian swimmer Pieter Timmers brings home Olympic silver

11:51 11/08/2016

Pieter Timmers on Wednesday won a silver medal for Belgium by finishing the men's 100m freestyle in 47.80, behind the 18-year-old Australian Kyle Chalmers who grabbed gold with 47.58. Timmers swam “the race of his life,” he told Belgian reporters.

The 28-year-old Timmers, of Belgian Limburg, made history at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro by claiming the silver and becoming the first Belgian to take home an Olympic medal in the sport since Frederik Deburghgraeve in 1996.

It is Belgium's third medal so far at Rio2016, after wins in cycling and judo.
